How do you release the psoas muscle?

A psoas, also called the iliopsoas, is one of two muscles that flexes and rotates the thigh. Both psoas muscles attach to the lumbar spine, pelvis, and femur. The iliacus muscle goes along the outside of the hip bone and the psoas major muscle goes inside. The release starts with finding your hip bone. You can do this by using an arm to feel your hip area. You are looking for the area just inside of your hip bone. Go along the side of your hip bone until it starts to curve in towards the front. It is along here where you will feel a muscle. This is your iliacus muscle.

Now you can begin the release. Place one hand on the muscle and the other hand on your belly. Inhale and as you exhale, slowly tilt your pelvis forward until you feel a gentle stretch in your iliacus muscle. Hold for a few seconds, then release the stretch, and gently move your pelvis back into a neutral position. Repeat this as many times as you like. The release is complete when the iliacus muscle feels soft and relaxed. The psoas muscle attaches to the top portion of your thigh, near the hip joint. You can find the upper section of this by tilting your pelvis forward again just to the side until you feel a stretch in that area. Hold for a few seconds and relax.

You should feel some release when you perform these stretches, but it may take several days before you feel a release. This is because the psoas muscle has been tight for quite some time and it may take some time to release.
